US-Spitzenpolitikerin Pelosi: Amerika steht an der Seite Armeniens

Es ist eine klare Einordnung der dramatischen Ereignisse der vorigen Tage, welche die Vorsitzende des US-Repräsentantenhauses nahezu zeitgleich während ihres Treffens mit der zum jüngsten Angriff Aserbaidschans auf Armenien noch immer schweigenden Bundesaußenministerin in einer schriftlichen Mitteilung vorgenommen hat.

Unter ausdrücklichem Verweis auf den Völkermord der Türken an 1,5 Millionen Armeniern ist Nancy Pelosi am Samstag von Berlin nach Jerewan weitergereist.

We are proud to travel to Yerevan following the 2019 passage of House Resolution 296, which recognizes the murder of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire as genocide, and following President Biden becoming the first president to formally acknowledge the Armenian Genocide. It is the moral duty of all to never forget: an obligation that has taken on heightened urgency as atrocities are perpetrated around the globe, including by Russia against Ukraine. Our Congressional delegation’s visit to Armenia is a powerful symbol of the United States’ firm commitment to a peaceful, prosperous and democratic Armenia, and a stable and secure Caucasus region.

Bei einer gemeinsamen Pressekonferenz mit ihrem armenischen Amtskollegen Alen Simonyan ging Pelosi am Sonntag auf die wiederholten Angriffe Aserbaidschans auf Bergkarabach sowie das armenische Kernland ein:

What happened in the last week is just more evidence of what we have been finding for a long time: The treatment of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh, the treatment of holy sites as well as the people there. We are speaking from the standpoint of the congress of the United States. Our president has been a proud supporter of the Armenians in terms of the genocide resolution and we work together to see what the next steps will be.

The democracy in Armenia is a value to the world. Congratulations to the success of the velvet revolution and the recent free and fair elections! We have two main issues here: What does security in Armenia mean to both regional and global security? What does democracy in Armenia mean in the fight between democracy and autocracy which is going on in the world now? In both cases it means a great deal. And that’s why we as Americans want to be helpful.

Pelosi sprach weiterhin von illegalen und tödlichen Angriffen Aserbaidschans auf armenisches Gebiet, welche sie im Namen des US-Kongresses auf das Schärfste verurteilte. Armeniens Parlamentspräsident Simonyan wies darauf hin, dass der aktuelle Waffenstillstand durch Vermittlung der USA zustande gekommen sei. Auch forderte er Sanktionen gegen Aserbaidschan, das unmittelbar vor dem Angriff von der EU Kommissionspräsidentin zum „verlässlichen Partner“ erklärt worden war.

Danach traf Pelosi den im Jahr 2018 durch eine “Samtene Revolution“ an die Macht gekommenen und in demokratischen Wahlen bestätigten armenischen Premierminister Nikol Pashinyan. Es gehe um den globalen Kampf von Demokratie gegen Autokratie, sagte die US-Politikerin. Auch daher stehe Amerika an der Seite Armeniens.
